Colors, Culture, and Celebration: Festival of India Lights Up Harrisburg with Vibrant Festivities

The International Society of Krishna Consciousness opened its hearts to the masses on Saturday, July 8th, 2023, on a scorching day in the state capital of Pennsylvania. The 13th annual Festival of India took place at City Island in Harrisburg, PA to celebrate the Hindu religion of Hare Krishna. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna was born in Mathura, India, over 5,000 years ago. He is believed to have appeared on Earth to fulfill a specific mission and that mission is to restore righteousness and relieve the world from the burden of evil. Lord Krishna's life and teachings are primarily documented in the epic texts of the Mahabharata, particularly in the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred dialogue between Krishna and the warrior Arjuna.

The festival holds significant meaning for many Indian people. India has a rich spiritual and religious heritage, and Krishna’s teachings and practices resonate with elements of this cultural fabric. “We do have people from all walks of life join us in celebration of Lord Krishna. Not only is this festival an opportunity for curious minds to learn more about the culture of India, but it is also an opportunity to bridge the gap of an often-misunderstood culture,” Sri Vrindavan Dhama, a devotee of The International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) of New Jersey, said at the festival this past weekend.

ISKCON temples and centers typically offer a range of activities and services, including regular worship services, congregational gatherings, deity worship, vegetarian prasadam (sanctified food), educational programs, and outreach initiatives. The Festival of India provided devotees and onlookers a peek behind their beautiful culture by spreading the word of their religion through singing, sacred text, food, and dance. The vibrant festival provides an opportunity for participants to deepen their connection with Krishna consciousness and experience the transformative power of devotion, love, and community through equality and a powerful display of togetherness.
