James McAvoy, a Scottish actor hailing from Glasgow, has captivated audiences worldwide with his talent, versatility, and commitment to his craft. With a career spanning over two decades, McAvoy has garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base for his nuanced performances across film, television, and stage. Recently, McAvoy has stepped away from the bright lights to pursue other creative endeavors. The Scotsman is taking time away from the silver screen to expound upon his life story and journey to become a leading man in Hollywood. With an ability to inhabit an array of characters, McAvoy entertains audiences with his raw emotional depth and presence. That presence was on display with his appearance on the latest podcast series entitled, “Retold.”

In speaking with McAvoy we asked about the difficulties finding the range to articulate in an accent that differs from his own.

“In doing accents it’s something I never really think about too much. I just, I don’t worry about If I’m getting an accent right. To me, it’s more about getting down the voice of the person.”

With these words, McAvoy invites us to explore the intricacies of his craft, where capturing the spirit of a character takes precedence over mere vocal mimicry. In keeping with that indomitable charm and spirit McAvoy elaborates on the joy of working with other actors from his homeland.

“I’ve never really thought to myself, oh no I feel like a fish out of water and a couple of times I’ve worked on a set with just Scottish people, and we all look around like this is different. We share something different.”

Retold is a podcast where the art of storytelling is reborn with each episode. The latest episode features McAvoy as he takes the listener on a journey of his career-defining roles as well as the pursuit to master the craft of performing arts. Born on April 21, 1979, in Glasgow, Scotland, James McAvoy discovered his passion for acting at a young age. After attending St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, he pursued his love for the performing arts by joining the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) in Glasgow. It was here that he honed his skills and gained a solid foundation in acting techniques, preparing him for the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead.

Episode one of the four-part series, Retold sees McAvoy tell the real-life story of his upbringing as an actor as well as his earlier days as a young man trying to make his way in Glasgow. He also delves into the true story that inspired the film War Dogs. The 2016 film follows the unlikely rise of teenagers Efraim Diviroli and David Packouz as they earn millions from the international arms trade during the Iraq and Afghan wars. One of James McAvoy's most notable attributes is his ability to seamlessly transition between genres and embody a wide range of characters. In the superhero genre, he brought depth and complexity to the role of a young Professor Charles Xavier in the "X-Men" film series, starting with "X-Men: First Class" (2011). His portrayal captured the essence of the iconic character, earning praise for his take on an already beloved character played by Sir Patrick Stewart.

McAvoy’s nuanced approach and ability to convey emotions make each of his portrayals compelling and capture the essence of what Maxson is trying to project in his latest picture. Whether it's a troubled individual, a superhero, or a historical figure, McAvoy's talent allows him to bring complexity and a genuine sense of humanity to his roles, McAvoy challenges the status quo of being an actor with only one dimension. Maxson also commented on the ease of his job when it comes to talented performers.

My job as a director is simple when I have the right artists. The better the actor. The better my words translate on screen. I just wave my arms and yell cut! The actors are who create the magic you see on the big screen.”

While the director sets the stage and guides the overall creative direction of the film, the actor's performance is crucial in conveying the story and engaging the audience on a deeper emotional level. Their collaboration is essential for the successful execution of a film, as the director's vision is realized through the actor's interpretation and performance. McAvoy uses the execution and collaborative mindset to maximize his performances through each character he takes on giving an original take thus distancing him from his contemporaries.

McAvoy's ability to adapt and embrace the unfamiliar with an open heart exemplifies the spirit of exploration and curiosity that lies at the core of his motivations as an artist and separates him from a garden variety entertainer that is just along for the ride. His performance varies based on his interpretation and the direction given by the filmmakers involved. In speaking with Alan Maxson, the director of Alien Planet an upcoming Sci-fi film he revels at the opportunity to work with imaginative artists that bring the film to life with McAvoy-like creativity.

“My latest film depended upon the creativity of the actors that were casted. A lot of this film worked with green screen and practical effects that challenged the emotionally range and tested the depth and brought forth a certain kind of nuance from our performers.”
